For those of you who do not know this about me...I am definitely a person that likes science...evidence based practice is an approach that I like to apply to all parts of my life! The sole purpose of this new blog is not to bore you but to serve as information for anyone that may be interested and also a good way for me to keep myself accountable and provide myself with my own "evidence based info."
My aunt and oma started seeing this doctor that we have deemed the "voodoo doctor" instead of calling him by his real name...and really I wish all doctors were voodoo doctors like him because his approach is simple really! He is all about holistic health! He sees the body as a whole and whenever a person comes to see him for the first visit, he looks at every aspect of the person and wants to uncover all the symptoms that you may be experiencing!
So for the last month or two, I have been going to see Dr. Urley to figure out what is exactly going on! (Don't worry...nothing super drastic, just would like to feel better overall!) Based off a list of symptoms and acupuncture points, he has suggested that I do the Candida yeast diet/cleanse/lifestyle...I want to try and avoid any words that make it seem like a fad just because its a new year and so on...but we picked January 1st as a starting point so that I could enjoy the holidays! Also since I am not completely pumped about removing SO many things out of my diet, we had a discussion about trying a gluten free lifestyle to see how I would feel without that major component in my life! Apparently a gluten intolerance can be hereditary and both my aunt and grandma have stopped eating gluten and feel loads better!
The Candida diet requires you to remove more than just gluten...the basis of that cleanse is to stop allowing the "bad" yeast to grow in your intestines...so I should really be moving gluten, yeast, sugar, and dairy but I am not that disciplined...baby steps!!
Today was day one of many! Dr. Ulrey said the best way to judge how successful you were with the day is not a pass or fail but more of a "were you 75% or 80% or 90%" with the opportunities you had to eat today? Sounds like how I write a speech therapy goal if you ask me ;-) I have been trying to be gluten free for the past month with the occasional splruge here and there because I knew come 1.1.12 it would be a no gluten zone in this body! So far the meals that we have made that are gluten free are absolutely tasty!! And I have a feeling that with the new gifts (a grill and a Vitamix blender!) from my dad and the Favarons...being gluten free and possibly dairy free will be a snap! Well as long as I am eating at home!
To wrap it up, the first day was not a culture shock or should I say a food catastrophe because I already have some gluten free recipes that I really enjoy! When knew that eating just meat and veggies could be so tasty :-) Except I need to get better at making kale chips...I semi-burned half of my first batch!
The real challenge this week while be finding quick and easy breakfast options since I am not a morning person (yet! just wait for the 60 day bikram yoga challenge to start next Sunday)!
Thanks for reading my random thoughts in no organized manner! I'll try to get more organized as time goes on!
